What is the Samba-VPN service?
VPN services enable users to access HUJI's academic resources,
such as: e-journals, libraries' databases etc.
The service is divided into 2 levels:
-
Web-VPN -
enables browsing to sites that are not reachable by using a connection outside HUJI's network.
Enables access to most of the databases and e-journals of the university's libraries.
https://samba.huji.ac.il/webvpn
-
VPN-client -
a connection program that is installed on the computer.
The connection enables access to extended services according to the connection authorization.

What does it do?
The Samba VPN client is a program that allows you to authenticate with
the University to establish a SSL encrypted tunnel that virtually places
your computer inside the University network. This type of network
connection is called VPN - Virtual Private Network. A VPN enables you to
access resources that are not reachable externally.
When the Samba VPN client is connected all your network traffic is
routed through the University network and is subject to the acceptable usage policy.
How does it work?
When the Samba VPN client is installed a virtual network adapter is
created in the operating system. When the VPN Client is started and
before any authentication is possible the VPN server, samba.huji.ac.il,
presents a digitally signed certificate to authenticate itself to the
VPN client. Only after the server identity is verified using the
certificate you will be able to enter your credentials (user name and
password). Once authenticated the virtual network adapter will be
assigned with an IP address within the HUJI IP address range and all
network traffic will be routed through it. Once this VPN is established
all the network traffic from the client computer will be sent to the
server and encrypted using SSL so that it will be secured even when
traveling through insecure and untrusted networks. When the traffic
reaches the VPN server the SSL wrapper that encrypted it is decoded and
removed and regular network traffic is routed to its original destination.
