General Information

Technical Information

Traffic Limitations
The Hebrew University supports two Internet connection types: ADSL and Cables.
Traffic rate limitations are enforced in all connection types to a total of 1MB/sec for all users. Only H-TTP and FTP are not limited.

Excessive Traffic
HUJI's communication network is available for academic purposes and for administrative purposes directly related to the university's mission.

The Computation Authority conducts periodic checks to locate sources of excessive traffic (which increase network load and costs) . The main sources of such traffic are heavy downloads/uploads of data mostly through the use of software for retrieving or sharing movies, music, TV, etc.

Other reasons for heavy traffic are mostly related to security breaches.

  • Unauthorized people using your account (we recommend periodic changing of your network-access password).
  • Infection of the computer by some form of malware.
  • Unsecured wireless connection. An unsecured wireless router configuration at home might allow unauthorized people (neighbors) to access the Internet via your router. You can read more about safe connection with routers on our site.

Users who produce excessive traffic will receive an e-mail message with instructions and will be required to contact one of our support centers within 10 days. The referral to the support centers is for reducing and preventing recurrence of the excessive traffic. Users who will not contact a support center during the allocated time will have their remote access to HUJI disabled.

For more information about HUJI's policy see:
http://ca.huji.ac.il/policy.shtml

Accounts Regulations
Since remote access accounts are personal, it is allowed to use each account per one connection only. Users who were found using more than one line in parallel will be blocked.

Security Requirements

Before connecting to the Internet make sure you have an Anti-Virus program installed in your computer, and that all System security patches are up to date.

Computers that are performing suspicious activity - creating a lot of parallel connections - are blocked or restricted. This activity is typical to viruses or to file sharing applications (Kaaza, Emule, etc.), which are not allowed to be used on the University's network.
