Internet Hebrew support for PC

You will need to add fonts and set them up only if you are using Netscape 4.x, Otherwise, when using Explorer or Netscape 6.2 the Hebrew should be transparent. NOTE: If you can't view Hebrew with your Explorer, reinstall Explorer using the Custom option and choose Hebrew support from the languages list.

Installing Hebrew fonts for Netscape4.x on WINDOWS 95/98
 Step 1: Downloading the fonts
  1. Load Netscape and connect to the address: http://pc.huji.ac.il/yw/webfont.exe
  2. Save the file to a temporary directory (for example : c:\temp )
Step 2 : Extracting the font files
  1. Double Click the file you've saved - webfont.exe (If you can't find it, go to Start-->Find-->Files or Folders, or hit the F3 key)
  2. In the end of the process the title Finished - webfont will appear at the top of the active DOS window
  3. Close the window.
Step 3 : Installing the fonts
  1. Press the start button and go to settings --> control panel
  2. Double click the Fonts icon
  3. Remove the font - Times New Roman Blackslanted, if it exists
  4. Click on File from the main menu and choose the option install new font
  5. Select the relevant folder from step 1 (where you've saved webfont.exe) from the Folders box. Two new fonts will appear at the top of the window : Web Hebrew AD (True Type) and Web Hebrew Monospace (Truetype).
  6. Press the choose all... button
  7. Mark the box Copy fonts to Fonts folder and press OK.


Step 4 : Setting up Netscape
  1. Load Netscape.
  2. Go to Edit --> Preferences
  3. Expand the Appearance category and choose Fonts
  4. Choose the following values for the appropriate fields according to the picture below:
  • For the encoding - Western
  • Variable Width Font - Web Hebrew AD
  • Fixed width Font - Web Hebrew Monospace


  1. Press O.K.
  2. If the Hebrew is still flipped in certain sites, add the following settings:
  3. Go to Edit -->Preferences
  4. Expand the Appearance category and choose Fonts
  5. Choose the following values for the appropriate fields according to the picture below:
  • For the encoding - User Defined
  • Variable Width Font - Times New Roman (Hebrew)
  • Fixed width Font - Courier New (Hebrew)



  1. Click OK.
  2. When you enter a site that shows Hebrew reversed click View-->Character set and toggle between Western and User Defined

Internet Hebrew support for Macintosh computers

Mozilla / Netscape 7

Full Hebrew support with auto-detect encoding. Recommended for System 9.x. For older system versions, use Netscape 4 and follow the instructions.

 

Netscape 4

Netscape4 can be configured to view Hebrew, but the correct encoding for the site should be manually selected.

Step 1: Downloading fonts

  1. You will need the fonts: Karen, NaveInternet and Arial Hebrew. If you do not have them installed you can download them from http://mac.huji.ac.il/internet-heb/hebfonts.sea.hqx
  2. You will find on your Desktop a folder named hebfonts.
Step 2: Installing the fonts
  1. Quit all active applications
  2. Double click the folder hebfonts. Select the fonts: HB Arial, NaveInternet Normal and Karen. Drag them over your System Folder when it is closed.
Step 3: Setting up Netscape to Logic Hebrew
  1. Load Netscape. Go to Edit --> Preferences. Click Fonts from the Category list,
  2. Choose the encoding, the fonts and the fields as shown below. Click OK.

Step 4: Setting up Netscape to Visual Hebrew

  1. Load Netscape. Go to Edit --> Preferences. Click Fonts from the Category list,
  2. Choose the encoding, the fonts and the fields as shown below. Click OK.

Step 5: Working with Hebrew

  1. Go to View-->Character set. Choose Western MacRoman for Visual Hebrew sites.
  2. Go to View-->Character set. Choose Central Europe (MacCE) for Logical Hebrew sites.
