Accessing HUJI e-mail through other ISPs
If you are connected to the Internet via other
ISP at home, via a network other than the Hebrew University. If you are connected
to some wireless network with your computer, or you are in an Internet
Cafee - you have a few options to access your mail:
- Web access
Connect to your E-mail through a browser.
It is advisable especially when you are away from your computer,
or if you are connecting for a short while to an "unknown" wireless
network (such as airport, hotel, etc.)
- Connect to Samba
Connect to your E-mail with a mail client. It is advisable
especially when you are away from your office with your laptop,
connected for a short while to an "unknown" wireless
network (such as airport, hotel, etc.)
- Setting your client's preferences
Reading your mail is always possible. Changing the mail client's setup
is necessary for sending mail as well from anothe network/ISP. Re-configuration
of the email client is recommended in cases where you basically use
your own computer and attached regularly to a certain Internet provider
or other network. You might wish to reconsider this solution if you
are abroad - it can result in a slow connection.
- Forward all your e-mail to another e-mail address
Forwarding your mail is recommended in case you leave Israel for
a long period and you will be having an alternative local mail account
for that period.
1) Web access
2) Connect to Samba
Instructions for using Samba: http://ca.huji.ac.il/services/internet/connect/SambaVPN/
Please note - you have to open a connection account (user%ra), if you
don't have one, before you leave. Access to the registration site is
possible only from HUJI network.
3) Setting your client's preferences
In order to be able to send mail through your HUJI account while connected
to another ISP, you should change the SMTP server
(or Outgoing mail server) of your mail client
(Outlook Express, Eudora, etc.) according to your ISP specifications.
To find out which outgoing mail server (or SMTP setting) to use, contact
your local system administrator, i.e. your ISP helpdesk, or the University
Computing Center (as the case may be).
Note: it is only possible to access your mail with a POP client.
You will not be able to access via other mail protocols.
Choose your mail client and operating system from the table below:
4) Forward your mail
Forwarding your mail is recommended in case you leave Israel for a
long period and you will be having an alternative local mail account
for that period. It solves the problem of the slow retrieve of your
mail from Israel, and enables to work in a more simple fashion with a
single local mail account. Please note that once you set the forward
option you will not be able to see your new messages from your HUJI account
- only from the mail account you've forwarded your mail to.
Follow the instructions to set forwarding
to your account.
